Dry Needling, does it work?
The answer is, YES!
If you are looking for relief from musculoskeletal pain, then yes indeed, dry needling does appear to be an effective pain relief option, based on this systematic review of dry needling.
In this review of 42 seperate studies, it was found that dry needling demonstrated large effects on pain and disability compared to no treatment, sham dry needling and other therapies. It was found to be useful for a wide variety of pain presentations including neck pain, shoulder pain and back pain.
It should be noted, that using dry needling in addition to other therapies appears to be more effective than DN used on its own. Therefore, dry needling combined with other therapies, should provide the most effective pain relief.
The style of dry needling that we use at Montville Massage and Myotherapy is a gentle style without the vigorous needle stimulation that is sometimes used in dry needling care.
